MARKET COMMENTARY

(Dec-13-2018 08:44)
Indian equities may open higher on Thursday, tracking bullish trends in SGX Nifty Index Futures and positive cues from global peers. Overseas, the Asian stocks were trading higher, following a strong US session overnight. However, hopes of improvement in trade talks between the US and China further boosted investor sentiment. Asian shares and the pound moved higher on Thursday as investors breathed a sigh of relief after British Prime Minister Theresa May survived a no-confidence vote, and as China appeared to be taking more steps to meet US demands to open its markets. Back home, bullish trends in the SGX Nifty Index Futures for December delivery, which were trading at 10,831.50, up by 43 points or 0.40 per cent, at 10:50 AM, Singapore Time, also indicated a positive start for local bourses. On the corporate front, The stocks of public sector undertaking (PSU) banks will be in focus as the new Reserve Bank of India (RBI) governor Shaktikanta Das is set to meet the top executives of these banks on Thursday. That apart, the investors are likely to react to key economic data (CPI and IIP numbers) released post market hours on Wednesday. On Wednesday, the domestic benchmark indices ended with sharp gains for the straight second session after the government appointed Shaktikanta Das as the RBI governor, amid buying in realty, Auto and metal stocks. Whereas, Asian stock markets rallied as US President Donald trump sounded upbeat about a trade deal with China, while sterling struggled with the risk of an imminent party coup against British Prime Minister Theresa May. The 30-share benchmark index closed trading at 35779.07 up by 629.06 points or by 1.79 per cent, while the NSE Nifty was at 10737.6 up by 188.45 points or by 1.79 per cent.

The rupee, however, declined by 16 paise to close at 72.01 against the US dollar amid strengthening of the greenback and rising crude oil prices.

Most experts feel that the departure of the RBI governor and appointment of Shaktikanta Das as the new governor could lead to relaxation in certain regulations for the banking sector (higher liquidity, relaxation of PCA framework) and a more liberal monetary policy.

At Macro front, two key macro data came out post market hours on Wednesday. industrial production and retail price inflation — improved their performance in October and November, respectively. Industrial activity grew at an 11-month high of 8.1 per cent in October, while the retail inflation rate fell to a 17-month low of 2.33 per cent in November, showed the latest data released by the Central Statistics Office (CSO).

Meanwhile in Europe, UK Prime Minister Theresa May won a crucial vote of confidence in her leadership on Wednesday evening. May won the leadership challenge by 200 votes to 117 votes against her in the ballot of Conservative members of parliament (MPs). May needed a simple majority (at least 159 out of 315 Conservative MPs) to win the confidence vote. Winning this vote means her leadership cannot be challenged for another year now.
