Tata Steel opens facility in J'khand to upcycle junked shoes 02/07/2018 11:21

Tata Steel inaugurated a shoe upcycling centre at Noamundi in West Singhbhum district of the state to cater to the needs of the underprivileged sections of the society, reported PTI.

Feet First - a one-of-a-kind initiative by the steel major - invited people to donate discarded footwear of all shapes and sizes, which then would be refurbished at their facility and sold at nominal price, a release issued by the company said.

"In association with Mumbai-based Green Sole and Lions Club of Noamundi, Tata Steel is putting its best foot forward to carry forward its 'Best Out of Waste' initiative at Noamundi," it said.

Built over an area of 1500 sqft, the centre has been equipped with dyes, clicking, sole-patting machine and sewing machines at an estimated cost of Rs 28 lakhs.

"Around 1000 to 1500 footwear will be upcycled into slippers every month. Besides, the centre will also provide skill development training to interested people in and around in its operational area at Noamundi," the statement added.
